Fear Free Veterinary Equine Practice Exam

Understanding a horse's hearing is important because horses can hear higher frequencies than humans, which can significantly influence their perception of their environment. This heightened sensitivity to higher frequencies allows them to detect sounds that might be inaudible to us, making them more alert to potential threats. However, this sensitivity can also complicate their ability to identify the source of the sounds, as they may react to high-pitched noises that humans might not notice or be aware of. This aspect of their hearing can lead to situations where horses become startled or anxious due to noises that we might consider benign, emphasizing the need for careful management of their auditory environment. Such an understanding helps in reducing stress and anxiety in horses, ensuring that their surroundings are as calming as possible, particularly during veterinary visits or other stressful situations.
